Crime-busting employee receives R1-million

A vigilant First National Bank (FNB) employee on Monday became a millionaire in this year’s Vow of Vigilance campaign, which saves the bank and customers millions of rands by preventing fraud.

Mother of two Celeste Els (26) was entered in the competition for stopping a fraudulent cheque.

Monday’s R-1-million prize brings the total amount of funds disbursed to R12-million since this employee-driven, anti-fraud campaign was launched in 1999. The Vow of Vigilance has been effective in foiling fraudulent attempts, with savings in excess of R440-million realised in the past seven years.

As part of the campaign, each FNB employee is asked to take a Vow of Vigilance and assume responsibility for detecting and stopping fraudulent activities perpetrated against the bank or its customers.

This means keeping an eagle’s eye on the fabrication of cheques, false documentation when opening accounts and strictly adhering to the bank’s procedures.

This year’s Vow of Vigilance campaign attracted more than 2 000 entries from employees across FNB. — I-Net Bridge
