R&B sensation Tsakani "TK" Mhinga was on Monday found dead in a Bryanston hotel, northern Johannesburg, police said. "We didn’t find any physical injuries on her body, but we will wait for the post-mortem report and the medical report" to establish the cause of death, a police spokesperson told the <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i>.

The death toll from a suspected cholera outbreak in southern Sudan has risen to 89 amid continued efforts to stem the epidemic, the World Health Organisation said in a statement on Monday. The United Nations health agency said 4 906 cases of acute watery diarrhoea were reported, 89 of them fatal, over the past month.

The political party formed to keep Matatiele in KwaZulu-Natal, the African Independent Congress, says it is disappointed in the Constitutional Court’s decision not to make a ruling on the demarcation issue before polling day on Wednesday. The court ruled that the election will go ahead as planned in the municipality.

Hundreds of squatters took to the streets of Durban over poor housing on Monday after the Durban High Court overruled a council decision not to allow the protest. Police stopped the marchers earlier in the day, claiming their action was illegal. However, they were allowed to proceed to the Durban City Hall.

The Pretoria High Court on Monday gave the go-ahead for the election to take place in Khutsong. The court turned down an application by a group calling itself the Merafong community to have the election postponed pending an application to contest the constitutionality of the municipality’s redemarcation.

The Democratic Alliance has renewed its call on President Thabo Mbeki to appoint a judicial commission of inquiry into certain aspects of the arms deal. The price of bread rose by more than 30% as stores in Zimbabwe opened for business on Monday, the latest blow to consumers in the country’s teetering economy. A regular loaf went up to Z 000 (about R3,68), from the government-controlled price of Z 000 (about R2,70).
