Opposition want action on Koeberg problems

Opposition parties have questioned the circumstances surrounding the Western Cape’s power outages resulting from the Koeberg nuclear power station’s ongoing problems. Democratic Alliance Cape Town mayoral candidate Helen Zille said on Tuesday reports of undisclosed problems at Koeberg over the weekend were liable to create serious concern among the public.

Baghdad market bomb kills 21 as Britain urges unity

At least 21 people were killed when a car-bomb ripped through a mostly-Shi’ite market in southern Baghdad on Tuesday as visiting British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw appealed for Iraqi unity. The evening explosion devastated the Abu Dshir general market in the capital’s southern district of Dura as people went about their evening shopping, also wounding 27, police said.

Icosa says Prince’s dismissal won’t affect poll

The dismissal of Central Karoo District municipal manager, Truman Prince, will not affect the municipal election drive of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (Icosa), the party said on Tuesday. Lyon was responding to news on Tuesday that a disciplinary committee had ruled that Prince be dismissed with immediate effect from his position as Central Karoo district municipal manager.

Workplace safety meeting too realistic for words

A health and safety meeting in a British factory building turned unexpectedly realistic on Tuesday when a floor suddenly collapsed, injuring four of the 21 participants. Firefighters were summoned to the Hyde Buildings in Manchester, northwest England, when the floor collapsed just as the assembled health and safety officers were discussing evacuation procedures.

Presidential pulling power in Macassar

Improved housing and shopping facilities were among the promises made when President Thabo Mbeki hit the campaign trial on the Cape Flats on Tuesday, ahead of the March 1 municipal election. First stop was the home of 82-year-old Macassar resident Lilly Jansen in Krymekaar Street — the oldest street in the low-income suburb.

Papers fete ‘living legend’ Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe turned 82 on Tuesday and was showered with praise and birthday wishes despite Zimbabwe’s mounting economic woes. The state daily <i>Herald</i> published a 16-page supplement of pictures of Mugabe and congratulatory messages while the private <i>Daily Mirror</i> dedicated eight pages to his birthday.
