Health workers’ strike reduced to pickets

An unprotected strike by health workers in Mpumalanga has been replaced by lunch-time pickets, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) said on Thursday. Provincial secretary December Manana said Nehawu met its members to report back on a meeting with Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla.

Gold, rand drag JSE down

The JSE was awash with red at noon on Thursday, knocked by a lower gold price and a firming in the rand from levels seen earlier in the day. Weakness in mining stocks offshore exacerbated the bourse’s losses. By midday, the all share index surrendered 0,57%.

Teeth bared in battle over world shark stocks

A group of wildlife experts weighed into the acrimonious battle over shark fishing on Thursday, saying very few species were threatened with extinction as some activists charge. They said that there was no targeted killing of sharks just for their fins — a Chinese delicacy — as most sharks are caught mainly for their meat.

Swallows crumble against Wits University

Wits University went clay-pigeon shooting in their Premier Soccer League game against Moroka Swallows at a balmy but largely deserted Germiston Stadium on Wednesday afternoon and ultimately found the Birds easy targets in a 4-0 demolition. Amazingly, the goal deluge only started in the 50th minute.

Bloemfontein Celtic scored a well-polished 2-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.
