More than 100 killed in violence in Chad

At least 100 people were killed in clashes between Arab and non-Arab tribes in south-eastern Chad last week, the government said on Tuesday. The violence came just one week after fighting between rebels and the army in the same area reportedly led to the deaths of about 100 guerrillas and more than 200 soldiers.

Democrats hoped to sweep Republicans out of power in the United States Congress on Tuesday after a bruising campaign dominated by discontent with the Iraq war and doubts about President George Bush’s leadership. Italian museum wants patriotic toilet returned

The fate of a toilet that flushes to the strains of Italy’s national anthem is in the hands of a tribunal following a complaint from a right-wing political party, a museum spokesperson said on Tuesday. The creation was part of an exhibit, titled Group Therapy, that opened at the museum of modern art in Bolzano in September.

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) on Tuesday formally approved communist Vietnam’s membership of the global free-trade system, opening up a new era of international commerce and investment for one of East Asia’s fastest-growing economies. The decision brought 12 years of negotiations to a successful conclusion.

Govt must be tougher on corruption, says DA

South Africa’s top leadership should set a better example on corruption if the country is to improve its rating on perceived levels of corruption, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Tuesday. ”Corruption scandals involving government officials and public representatives continue to undermine the country’s image,” the DA said.
