London Olympics could face huge tax bill

The 2012 London Olympics could face an additional £1-billion (,89-billion) bill because organisers didn’t include a tax on venue construction in the
original budget. London officials didn’t include value added tax when compiling the £2,38-billion (,51-billion) budget submitted to the International Olympic Committee as part of their bid in November 2004.

BCI shows increase in October

An increase in the business confidence index (BCI) for October was probably a temporary spike and not the start of a renewed surge in confidence, the South African Chamber of Business (Sacob) said on Monday. The increase to 99,5 in October came after a declining trend between May and September.

‘This is how champions behave’

Cricket Australia said on Tuesday it would investigate reports of rude behaviour by the Australian team after its Champions Trophy win in India last weekend. Ricky Ponting’s men were taken to task in Indian newspapers on Tuesday for pushing Indian cricket chief Sharad Pawar off the presentation dais after Australia’s eight-wicket win over the West Indies in Sunday’s final in Mumbai.

Ganguly keeps World Cup dream alive

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said on Tuesday he had not lost hope of playing in next year’s World Cup after returning to form with a century in a domestic tournament. The 34-year-old reminded national selectors that he had plenty of cricket left in him when he hammered an unbeaten 118 for East Zone against North Zone in a first-class Duleep Trophy match at Guwahati on Monday.

Mbeki, De Klerk to attend PW’s funeral

Both President Thabo Mbeki and former president FW de Klerk will attend PW Botha’s funeral on Wednesday. Botha, who was head of the government from 1978 to 1989, died peacefully at his Wildnerness home last week, aged 90. The Presidency said Mbeki had emphasised the need for a ”balanced” appraisal of Botha’s life.

More than 250 patients in PE have high-risk TB strain

More than 250 people in Port Elizabeth have been diagnosed with multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, media reports said on Tuesday. It said some of them were possibly living with the deadly extreme drug resistant (XDR) TB. At least 18 people in Nelson Mandela Bay metro had already died from multi-drug-resistant (MDR) TB, but officials would not confirm that the cause of death may have been XDR TB.

Lesotho opposition parties forge alliance

Three opposition parties in Lesotho announced the formation of a new alliance on Monday to fight a general election which is due to take place next year. The Alliance of Congress Parties brings together three parties — the Lesotho People’s Congress, Basotholand African Congress and Basotho Congress party — which split from the ruling Lesotho Congress for Democracy.
