The music publishing industry reached a tentative deal with operators of the Kazaa file-sharing network over claims of copyright infringement, an industry group said. Publishers pursuing a class-action suit against Kazaa informed a United States District Court on Monday that the peer-to-peer network had agreed to pay ”a substantial sum”.

A federal appeals court blocked a landmark judgement against the tobacco industry, allowing the companies to continue selling ”light” and ”low tar” cigarettes until their appeals can be reviewed. The decision by the United States Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday also allows the companies to continue for now the advertising campaigns that a federal judge in August ruled were misleading.

Identity documents, birth certificates and asylum seekers’ permits could be easily purchased, an South African Broadcasting Corporation documentary aired on Tuesday revealed. An investigator for Special Assignment managed to buy five IDs, temporary IDs, birth certificates and temporary asylum seekers’ permits — 11 documents in total — for R10Â 000.

By the early 21st century, Pieter Willem (PW) Botha’s name had become a byword for unaccountable government and the autocratic exercise of power. Botha, who died on Tuesday night at his home Die Anker near the Wilderness in the Western Cape, aged 90, was the archetype ”kragdadige” Afrikaner and a worthy successor to John Vorster, whom he replaced as prime minister.

PW Botha, the former prime minister and president of South Africa, long known as ”the Groot Krokodil”, died on Tuesday night at his home in the Wilderness, in the Western Cape. He was 90. His second wife Barbara found him dead in bed just after 8pm. He had seemed to be in good health.
