The Sudanese military declared United Nations special envoy Jan Pronk persona non grata on Friday, accusing him of ”waging war against the armed forces”, in the latest escalation in a war of words between Khartoum and the international community. A senior general called for the envoy’s swift deportation.

A judge on Friday postponed a hearing on a lawsuit by human rights groups challenging the government’s decision to allow American pop star Madonna to start adoption procedures for a motherless, 13-month-old Malawian boy. Judge Andrew Nyirenda postponed a hearing on the case until next Friday.

On Friday, Car-Free Day, it took officials of the Gauteng department of transport and public works 16 minutes on a minibus taxi to get from Soweto to Park Station in central Johannesburg — a trip that usually takes Sowetan commuters 30 to 45 minutes. However, private schools in Gauteng broke up for mid-term holidays on Thursday.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on security vehicles escorting Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh’s convoy through Gaza on Friday, but the Hamas leader was unhurt. Officials in Haniyeh’s office said the attack did not appear to be an assassination attempt, but it comes at a time of growing tensions between rival Palestinian factions that have sparked fears of civil war.

A report by the Department of Labour on its findings of a probe into safety at petrochemicals group Sasol has been handed to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana revealed on Friday. The probe was prompted by blasts at Sasol plants in the past two years.
