Gauteng traffic ‘flowing’ on Car-Free Day

On Friday, Car-Free Day, it took officials of the Gauteng department of transport and public works 16 minutes on a minibus taxi to get from Soweto to Park Station in central Johannesburg — a trip that usually takes Sowetan commuters 30 to 45 minutes. However, private schools in Gauteng broke up for mid-term holidays on Thursday.

Palestinian PM unhurt after attack on convoy

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on security vehicles escorting Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh’s convoy through Gaza on Friday, but the Hamas leader was unhurt. Officials in Haniyeh’s office said the attack did not appear to be an assassination attempt, but it comes at a time of growing tensions between rival Palestinian factions that have sparked fears of civil war.

Sasol safety report handed to NPA

A report by the Department of Labour on its findings of a probe into safety at petrochemicals group Sasol has been handed to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana revealed on Friday. The probe was prompted by blasts at Sasol plants in the past two years.

In Kazakhstan, the hungry do eat a horse

It felt like I had been chewing for days, yet the plate of stewed horse, lamb and unidentified liver, served on a bed of greasy dough, appeared to be getting no smaller. Determined to prove to the local officials hosting a group of foreign reporters that I would not spurn the Kazakh national dish, beshbarmak, I chomped on.
