The MTN Group on Thursday issued a tender for its marketing advertising account as the group strives to entrench its position as the leader in telecommunications in developing markets in Africa and the Middle East. Ten major advertising agencies have been invited to pitch for the MTN account.

Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Valencia all maintained their 100% records with their third straight wins as the Champions League group phase reached the halfway stage on Wednesday. Chelsea handed European champions Barcelona a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge in Group A where Didier Drogba scored an outstanding individual goal after 47 minutes.

Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Thursday marked the 20th anniversary of independence hero Samora Machel’s death in a mystery plane crash, hailing him as an ”African hero”. Guebuza and South African President Thabo Mbeki will later on Thursday jointly pay homage to Machel at the site of the plane crash in South Africa.

United States President George Bush on Wednesday for the first time acknowledged a possible parallel between the raging violence in Iraq and the Vietnam war. Bush was asked in an ABC News interview if he agreed with a New York Times columnist’s comparison of the strife in Iraq with the Tet offensive, which is considered a key turning point in the US war in Vietnam.

Some tight bowling and magnificent fielding by the Titans prevented the Warriors from winning their first limited-overs match of the MTN domestic championship at Buffalo Park on Wednesday. Set 214 to win, the Warriors finished on a disappointing 188 for five wickets, a tantalising 26 runs short of victory.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Wednesday shifted ground on the continuing presence of British troops in Iraq by saying it was government policy to leave the country within 10 to 16 months — so long as the security situation allowed. Blair’s comments appear to be an attempt to pacify the restive mood of the British army.

The wife of a former radio personality died of smoke inhalation in a veld fire which got out of control on Tuesday. Madelein Engelbrecht (41) the wife of the former managing director of Jacaranda FM, Willem Engelbrecht, was fighting a veld fire with other farmers near Dewagendrift, east of Pretoria, when she was she was overcome by the smoke.

When two twenty-somethings posted a home-made video on <i>YouTube</i> last week they initially attracted more than 1,3-million views, but they didn’t earn a cent for their efforts. This didn’t matter to them because the two in question, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, owned the company and had just sold it to Google for $1,65-billion.

One of rugby’s premier flyhalves, Stephen Larkham, says he may have a run at inside-centre on the Wallabies’ tour of Europe next month. As assistant coach Scott Johnson attempts to reshape the backline, Larkham has been training at inside-centre, with regular number 12 Matt Giteau at scrumhalf and winger Mark Gerrard at flyhalf.

Angola seek to put the seal on the greatest year in their soccer history with a record-breaking fourth triumph in the Cosafa Castle Cup when they face Zambia in Lusaka in Saturday’s final. Angola drew two of their three matches in a surprisingly proficient World Cup debut performance in Germany in June and came within one goal of reaching the African Nations Cup quarterfinals.
