A club owned by Sierra Leone star Mohamed Kallon is set to cause a stir in the African Champions League this weekend. FC Kallon shocked fellow debutants Ocean Boys of Nigeria by forcing a 0-0 draw last month in the first leg of a first-round qualifier for the ,5-million competition.

Chinese President Hu Jintao on Thursday announced a debt waiver, cash grants, increased market access and ”pragmatic cooperation” with war-ravaged Mozambique on the last major stop of his current African tour. Hu signed a slew of cooperation agreements and announced that Beijing was waiving Mozambique’s bilateral debt.

The happiness that comes with freedom applies equally to the challenge of dealing with crime, President Thabo Mbeki said in his State of the Nation address during the opening of Parliament in a rainy Cape Town on Friday. "Obviously, we must continue and further intensify the struggle against crime," he said.

The government’s reaction to the heated national debate on crime is expected to be high on President Thabo Mbeki’s agenda during his State of the Nation address on Friday morning. The speech is expected to be upbeat, including a focus on ”the age of hope” and reference to the challenges posed by South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 World Cup.

A fourth man has been arrested for the rape and murder of 14-year-old schoolgirl Thato Radebe, Soweto police said on Thursday. The 18-year-old was taken into custody in Zola, Soweto, said Captain Lindiwe Mbatha. Radebe’s body was found in a field in Soweto on Saturday morning. She had been raped, stabbed and stoned to death.

The United States federal body charged with protecting air passengers from terrorist attacks is asking governments around the world for permission to place armed pilots on international flights. The transport section of the Department of Homeland Security wants to extend the system whereby pilots are currently armed on a small number of domestic flights.
