Minister concerned over closure of farm schools

The KwaZulu-Natal minister for education, Ina Cronje, expressed concern on Sunday over the closure of at least four farm schools in the province. She said her department met on Saturday with the agriculture department’s provincial minister, Mtholephi Mthimkhulu and the members of Congress of South Africa Trade Unions to discuss the farm schools’ problems.

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams gestured ”number one” with her index finger after rolling back the years to gatecrash the Australian Open quarterfinals on Sunday. The unseeded Williams crushed eleventh seed Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-2 in front of an adoring crowd at the Rod Laver Arena after passing the sternest test yet in her comeback from injury.

EU eyes emissions limits for new cars

The European Commission is set to decide this week whether to propose tough new emissions limits on new car models after the automotive industry failed to meet voluntary targets. EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas is eager to set binding limits on new passengers cars but needs the backing of his colleagues in the European Union’s executive arm to go ahead with the proposal.

McMillan leads New Zealand to 218

Veteran New Zealand batsman Craig McMillan rode his luck and came to the rescue as the Kiwis made 218 in their triangular one-day series clash with Australia here Sunday. McMillan’s vigorous 89 enabled his side to recover from 136 for seven and post a competitive total after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Kenya’s Kelai wins Mumbai marathon

Kenya’s John Kelai won the Mumbai Marathon on Sunday as thousands of the city’s residents ran alongside top athletes from Africa and Australia. Kelai clocked a time of two hours, 12 minutes and 27 seconds to beat out Ethiopians Gashaw Melese with 2:12,32 and Tariku Jufar in 2:12,49.

Police: No new treason-plot fears

The police do not fear a renewed treason threat from the harbourers of Boeremag fugitives Herman van Rooyen (33) and Rudi Gouws (28). The pair were recaptured on Saturday after escaping from court last year. ”Although we have made no further arrests, people should not worry as we have the core group of 22 men believed to have been behind the treason plot,” said a a police spokesperson.

Russians to build power stations in Zim

A Russian business delegation is due in Zimbabwe on Sunday to sign a deal worth -million for the construction of mini hydro-power stations. The delegation, from Russia’s Turbo Engineering, was expected to sign the deal this week for the construction of 17 power stations on small dams around country.
