Blades blunt Boro in Cup stalemate

Sheffield United and Middlesbrough will both feature in the FA Cup quarterfinal draw after their fifth round tie on Sunday ended in a goalless draw. The closest either side came to a first-half goal at United’s Bramall Lane ground was when home striker James Beattie hit the outside of the post for the Blades just before the interval with a free-kick from the edge of the box.

Obama visits Edwards, Wisconsin battle looms

United States. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama slipped away for a private meeting with former rival John Edwards on Sunday to seek his endorsement as the Illinois senator and Hillary Clinton battle for Wisconsin. After Tuesday’s voting, Democrats have an eye on March 4, when the big states of Texas and Ohio hold primaries.

Blatter lays down law for 2018 Cup

South America and Africa have no chance of hosting the 2018 Soccer World Cup. ”Of all five continents available to present, South America and Africa will not be allowed to,” Fifa president Sepp Blatter said on Sunday. ”If we hadn’t taken the decision to have a rotation policy in the first place, Africa would never had had the chance to host the World Cup, neither would South America.”

ANC says DA is making a ‘mockery of Parliament’

The Democratic Alliance (DA) was making a mockery of Parliament, the African National Congress charged on Sunday. This, after public protector Lawrence Mushwana recommended Parliamentary action against DA MP Mike Waters. Waters complained last year that President Thabo Mbeki had abused his office by demanding that Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang get priority on a organ-transplant list.

Polls open for Pakistani vote

Fears of violence overshadowed Pakistan’s general election on Monday with 80 000 troops backing up police to watch over a vote that could return a Parliament set on driving President Pervez Musharraf from office. Musharraf has lost much popularity over the past year because of his manoeuvres to hold on to power which included a clash with the judiciary.

Chinese firm wins big Libyan railway contract

A Chinese contractor has won bids to build two railways in Libya worth a combined $2,6-billion as China enhances its economic presence in energy-rich African nations. Under one contract, China Railway Construction, the firm that built part of the railway to Tibet, would construct a 352km west-to-east coastal railway.
