Cosmos, Chiefs game ends goalless

The bookmakers may well have shut up shop and refused to take bets on a goalless draw for the Premier League game between bottom-of-the-log Jomo Cosmos and struggling Kaizer Chiefs at Orkney’s Oppenheimer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams which have drawn most of their games this season. Chiefs have drawn nine and while Cosmos have drawn seven of their previous 16 games.

So, after one of the most gruesome exhibitions of missed opportunties, it was another predictable 0-0 result between two teams, who seem to have forgotten the route to goal.

Judging by the number of gilt-edged opportunities enjoyed by both teams, the final scoreline could easily have been 5-5 — although Cosmos enjoyed a slight edge and should have been leading 3-0 at the interval.

Devoid of any blame from this error-infested encounter were goalkeepers Itumeleng Khune (Chiefs) and Avril Phali (Cosmos), neither of whom put a foot or hand wrong throughout the 90 minutes.

As for the rest, the less said the better, with defensive errors mingled with the woeful finishing.

Cosmos owner coach Jomo Sono declared afterwards that as long as his team were playing attractive build-up soccer in midfield he was satisfied.

But at this rate his team might end up in the lower division if something drastic does not emerge to cure the scoring crisis.

The point gained from Sunday’s game marginally eases Cosmos’ relegation concerns, but Ezenkhosi remain at the bottom of the log with an inferior goal-difference to the Black Leopards.

As long as the misleadingly named ”Terminator” Malebane, Geoffrey Massa and company keep missing their chances, a hard grind lies ahead for Sono’s team.

As for Chiefs, hopes of Premier League glory this season appear only a distant dream. – Sapa
