Veterans of Zimbabwe’s liberation war warned a former ally of President Robert Mugabe who will run against him in next month’s elections that he was a traitor, government newspapers reported on Wednesday. Former finance minister Simba Makoni, a senior member of the ruling Zanu-PF, entered the presidential race on Tuesday.

The power-supply crisis and looming fresh-water shortage are early warning signs that South Africa needs to curb use of natural resources, global wildlife fund WWF said on Wednesday. ”South Africa has a narrowing time window in which to act decisively to prevent critical resource shortages,” said South African WWF chief executive Dr Morné du Plessis.

The cash-strapped Australian Rugby Union said on Wednesday it was shocked at a government decision to scrap funding for a national rugby academy in Queensland state. Former prime minister John Howard committed Aus-million to the project last June but the new Labour government of Kevin Rudd said it was now being axed under a cost-cutting programme.

SABMiller, the world’s second-biggest brewer, has acquired 94,7% of Grolsch NV shares, securing its €816-million (,2-billion) takeover of the Dutch brewer. SABMiller said in a statement that its bid was unconditional and shareholders who had not yet offered their shares could tender them until February 20.

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) Business Confidence Index (BCI) dropped even further in January to 93,8 after measuring 94,8 in December 2007. SACCI said that apart from a single instance in April 2007 when the BCI flared up to 101,9, the index had been in a declining trend throughout 2007.

An explosion killed at least 20 people and wounded a hundred more on Tuesday in a northern Somali port where Somali and Ethiopian immigrants begin the dangerous crossing to Yemen. Most of the wounded were Ethiopian immigrants, Bosasso hospital nurse Mohamed Ali Hassan said.

Sri Lankan troops backed by tanks and artillery destroyed 30 Tamil Tiger bunkers in the island’s far north on Wednesday killing 12 rebels, while air force jets bombed a gathering of rebel leaders, the military said. The air raid targeted a gathering of senior Tigers near their de facto capital of Kilinochchi.
