Durban art picks: January 21 2010

Prominent artists are featured alongside relative unknowns this week.

One of Durban’s most innovative and exciting galleries on Monday January 24 at 6.30pm gets
2011 off to an impressive start with a brace of compelling exhibitions by prominent painter
Petros Ghebrehiwot and acclaimed photographer Julie Mayo. Mayo’s exhibition is entitled The Art of the Construction and consists of astonishingly manipulated digital photographs which reflect the artist’s fascination with the large-scale industrial construction process. Original images captured during the construction of Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium have been hauled through the digital bush backwards to infuse them with a visceral intensity that sensually captures the energy, the chaos, the danger; the smell of wet concrete, sawn timber and freshly dug earth and the ear-splitting sound of metal against metal. Ghebrehiwot is an Eritrean- born, South Africa-based artist whose works are a powerful blend of Rothko-esque abstract expressionism and powerful symbolism.

  • One of the great artistic traditions in Durban is the annual Members’ Exhibition by the KwaZulu-
Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA) which traditionally kicks off the KZNSA Gallery’s new year as the first exhibition on its calendar. The KZNSA has a rich and diverse membership base with many members professional or amateur artists or involved in the arts in some way or another. When each and every one of them is given carte blanche to create a bespoke work for the annual exhibition the results are always as unpredictable as they are exciting with many an astonishing discovery taking place and more than a few hidden talents making a public outing for the first time. The theme for the 2011 incarnation of the Members’ Exhibition is The Bold and The Beautiful and it will be more than interesting to see what rough jewels the excavation unearths.

Opening Tuesday January 25 at 6pm at then KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road. Closes February
    19. Tel: 031 277 1705 Email [email protected] Visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
