The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Monday urged Fidelity Security Services in Limpopo to pay its workers employed at the World Cup’s Peter Mokaba stadium.
“We condemn all forms of exploitation during this Fifa World Cup, and we urge Fidelity Security Services in Limpopo to pay workers what is due to them with immediate effect,” the union federation said in a statement.
Cosatu said the workers went on strike when an assurance to pay them did not materialise on June 18.
The union federation said it had met Marco Prinsloo and James Reed from Fidelity Services who suggested that the matter be discussed with the regional manager, DM Paton.
Cosatu, however, allege that Paton refused to meet the organisation on June 18.
“Paton said he would terminate workers contracts and pay them on June 21 at 10am.
“Workers were also to have handed in their uniforms before they were paid.”
Cosatu said a list of all affected workers had been submitted to the offices of Fidelity Security on June 21.
“We were able to get a written agreement letter from Fidelity to pay all 23 affected workers their monies on June 22 at 8am,” Cosatu said.
Fidelity Security Services could not comment immediately. –Sapa
