W CAPE GOVT OFFERS REWARD TO END VIOLENCE

THE Western Cape government is offering up to R1-million for information leading to the conviction of criminals responsible for taxi-related violence in the province. Acting premier Cecil Herandien said he has also appointed a special committee to deal with the transport situation. Safety and security MEC Mark Wiley will be co-ordinating the committee. Provincial police commissioner Lennit Max, along with senior intelligence personnel, earlier on Monday briefed the provincial executive committee on the province’s current situation. Herandien said the safety of commuters is of the utmost importance. Since March 27 conflict between Golden Arrow Bus Services and Cape Flats taxi operators has resulted in the deaths of two bus drivers and a taxi driver. Several commuters have been injured and buses stoned and petrol bombed. Taxi operators want Golden Arrow to cease operating in townships at weekends.
