HUNDREDS of women in the northern Nigerian city of Kano were expected to spend the next few days in detention after a crackdown ordered by religious officials, police said Sunday. A policemen in Kano, the largest city in northern Nigeria, confirmed that more than 200 women had been arrested in the past week after being seen talking to members of the opposite sex. They are being questioned about whether they are involved in adultery or prostitution, said a representative for Kano police chief Yakubu Bello Uba. The crackdown was ordered after two prostitutes inadvertently solicited the religious adviser, Tukur Mahmoud, a police official said. Authorities in Kano State last month introduced strict Islamic law but have yet to make little impact on the levels of prostitution or the numbers of drinking bars in Kano, the north’s largest city. – AFP
