THE US government has terminated the temporary refugee status granted in 1991 to Liberians who fled the raging war in their country. Attorney General Janet Reno had in a notice late July announced that the Temporary Protected Status that allowed Liberian war refugees to stay in the US would cease as from 28 September. In that notice, she observed that although conditions in Liberia remain difficult, the overall situation is not sufficiently adverse to prevent most Liberian nationals in the US from returning to Liberia in safety. The action has roused concern among the 10000 Liberian refugees in the USA, who are accusing the US government of discriminatory immigration practices against Africans.
