SWAZI UNION BANNED FROM AIRWAVES

SWAZILAND’S government Broadcasting and Information Services (SBIS) has banned the kingdom’s largest labour union organisation, the Swaziland Federation of Trade Unions, from broadcasting any announcements or other information unless they have been approved by the police, African Eye News Service reports. SBIS director Tars Makama told the roughly 200000 strong union federation at the weekend he would not give it access to the airwaves unless the police first gave written permission. The federation, which has played a prominent role in the campaign for multi-party democracy in Swaziland, used to announce union meetings on the state-run radio station. But Makama said on Sunday he would not allow the federation to use the airwaves to further the its political agenda.
