Sales records pop at Nederburg auction

TOTAL wine sales at the annual Nederburg Auction in Paarl have reached a record R6 449 640 – the highest in the 27-year history of the auction.

On the first day sales amounted to R3.7m and auctioneer Patrick Grubb, within the first hour, passed the R50m mark for total sales since 1974.

Ray Edwards, on behalf of the Spar Group, bought twice as much as last year – 1532 cases to the value of R1_231_000, accounting for 19.10% of total sales.

This is only the second time in the history of the Nederburg Auction that a single buyer topped the R1m mark.

The second biggest buyer again was the Makro group with 698 cases valued at R590_580 and third Pick ‘n Pay with 590 cases for R383_500.

There were a few newcomers in the top ten buyers, including the Wine of the Month Club, Midmar Liquors Cape Town and regular auction-goers the Raith family from the Hotel Heinitzburg of Windhoek, as well as Metro Cash and Carry.

The top price paid for a dry white wine was R1050 for six bottles of 1998 Vergelegen Chardonnay Reserve.

The highest price for a sweet white wine went to Klein Constantia for their Vin de Constance 1987 at R3_300 per case.

Top price for red wine was R6400 for a case of Lanzerac Pinotage 1964, the closing bid of the auction.

The highest price paid for fortified wine was a single case of Monis Collectors Port 1961, which sold for R3_100.

South African buyers accounted for 84% of sales, while 9% went to International buyers and 7% to Namibian buyers.

The charity auction raised R258_200 for the Hospice Association of South Africa (Hasa)

Hans Schreiber, co-owner of Lusan Premium Wines, paid the highest price – R200_000 for a 300 litre barrel of Nederburg Pinotage 2001 made by the newly appointed cellar master, Razvan Macici and his new team.
