RWANDAN ARMY KILLS 35

THE Rwandan army killed 35 rebels and took into custody 21 others, most of them minors, after they launched an attack in a town in northwestern Rwanda, the deputy army chief said this week. The attack in Nyamutera, near Ruhengeri, was launched early on Sunday and continued until Monday morning, according to Brigadier General James Kabarebe, who said the attackers infiltrated Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The army suffered no losses, he said. It was the first major attack by Rwandan Hutu rebels – who have rear bases in the DRC – on Rwandan territory in two years. Most of the rebels taken prisoner by the army were between 12 and 16 years old, the deputy army chief said. – AFP
