Can you draw? Do you have your matric? Can you communicate readily in English? Yes? Then you have the basic qualifications required to study in one of the most stimulating and interesting businesses in the world today: animation.
Or do you want to make a career out of your communication skills? Then the powerful medium of radio could well be for you. And the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (Nemisa) offers training in both these burgeoning fields.
Internationally the animation industry is flying. In Hollywood, Disney and Pixar are still leading the way, but studios in other countries are rapidly catching up, among them those in Bollywood. And home-grown South African projects are multiplying too. It is estimated that current South African projects will require the talents of 2 000 animators in the next 18 months.
Based in Johannesburg, Nemisa offers a three-year course in the field. In the animation industry it is now widely accepted that the animation course offered by the Algon-quin University of Canada is one of the world’s most visionary and successful courses, and Nemisa has negotiated the rights to offer this curriculum in South Africa.
Nemisa is also offering tuition in Toon-Boom, the computer programme used (and developed) by all the leading animation studios in the world. In addition, Nemisa’s instructors have all worked in the animation industry.
But perhaps radio is for you. Consider: its reach and influence are enormous. Radio goes where no newspapers can be found.
Radio in South Africa is the medium of the people. And its influence is growing. More community radio stations are opening. More languages are being covered. New digital technologies are constantly being introduced for greater clarity of reception.
Nemisa offers a radio production qualification at its studio complex in Parktown, Johannesburg. The resources consist of two digital and two analogue studios, as well as individual workstations.
If you have matric or a grade 12/NQF Level 4 related qualification, as well as communication talents, then a career in radio makes sense.
For full information on content, costs and timing, contact Nemisa on 011 484 0583; or at [email protected]. Or access the institute’s website at www.nemisa.co.za. A small number of bursaries and limited accommodation are available to needy students with the right qualifications.
