Car bomb adds bitter taste to EU Summit

At least six people were injured when a car bomb exploded on Friday morning in the resort of Fuengirola on Spain’s southern Costa del Sol, police said.

The attack occurred just hours before the start of a summit of European Union leaders in Seville, about 160km to the northwest of Fuengirola. The car bomb exploded at a hotel near the beach in Fuengirola.

Police were able to evacuate the area after two anonymous calls warning of the attack were made on behalf of the Basque separatist group ETA to a vehicle rescue service in the Basque country, northwestern Spain.

Another bomb exploded hours later in a downtown street of Marbella, a beach resort on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

The blast occurred at 1.00pm in the centre of

Marbella, located only 27km from Fuengirola.

The blast came a day after the Basque militant group ETA issued a statement calling on the European leaders at their summit in Seville to put pressure on Spain and France to grant autonomy to the Basques.
