South Africa is not running out of beer, South African Breweries (SAB) said on Tuesday.
SAB spokesperson Janine van Stolk said there had been some recent reports that had led consumers to believe that there was a new, general shortage of beer.
”This is incorrect. We are aware of the pressures on suppliers caused by unusually high demand over the last few months, and have put certain measures in place in order to minimise inconvenience to consumers and customers,” she said.
”We’d like to assure consumers that the one thing South Africa will never run out of is beer,” she said.
She said there would only be some temporary shortage of certain brands, mainly in those that came in green and flint or clear glass.
The situation would start to improve as new imported glass supplies started to arrive in July, she said.
”As a courtesy to consumers, we informed the public that some intermittent stock shortages may occur in certain products. We want to ensure that they are inconvenienced as little as possible and can plan ahead.”
She said while the problem was being solved by prioritising production and importing 50 000 tons of glass, consumers could also assist by returning returnable bottles as quickly as possible.
SAB distributes brands such as Sarita, Castle Lite, Peroni, Nastro Azzurro, Pilsner Urquell, Hansa Marzen Gold, Miller Genuine Draft, Hansa Pilsener and Castle Lager. — Sapa
