Former Bafana Bafana striker George Koumantarakis is likely to join big-spending Castle Premiership side Mamelodi Sundowns.
Koumantarakis is reported to have been negotiating with the Chloorkop-based side after his contract with English first-division side Preston North End expired at the end of last season.
The 30-year-old Koumantarakis, who has been playing in Europe for almost six years, is now a free agent.
He was dropped from the Bafana Bafana squad to play against Burkina Faso during the 2006 World Cup qualifier at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Koumatarakis, a former Manning Rangers and Supersport United striker, is likely to be one of the new recruits to be paraded by Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe at a media briefing in Sandton on Thursday morning.
Sundowns are also reported to be chasing Zimbabwean captain Peter Ndlovu from English first-division side Sheffield United.
The other new players expected to be paraded include Tshiamo Seneo from Moroka Swallows, Neil Winstanley from Wits University and Vuyo Mere from first-division side Premier United.
Another player who has been signed by Sundowns is former Bafana Bafana and Wits University midfielder Josta Dladla, who returned home after spending about three seasons in Denmark.
Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Brian Baloyi is also rumoured to have joined Sundowns after his contract with Amakhosi expired at the end of last season.
Sundowns communications director Alex Shakoane confirmed that Motsepe will make a ”big announcement on Thursday”.
”He is the one who will reveal the names of our new recruits,” said Shakoane. — Sapa
