In contrast to The Felicia Mabuza-Suttle Show, Dali Tambo’s People of the South is regarded as an entertaining talk show which does not dwell on politics and is more “light-hearted”, says television analyst Don Seokane.
People of the South’s ratings are highest among Afrikaans-speaking audiences, pulling in 11ARs. According to Seokane, People of the South “definitely appeals to middle-aged Afrikaans males”, with Nguni audiences scoring the lowest ratings, just behind English audiences. In terms of age groups, the Dali Tambo programme received its highest ratings among the 35+ group where it scored 10 ARs. The average number of viewers was about six ARs which translates into about 600 000 viewers.
Oprah Winfrey, the darling of American talk shows, scored two ARs but this was because of the time it is scheduled, Seokane says. It runs in the afternoons, when most people are still at work, and late at night, when most people have already gone to bed.
