RUMOURS of a forthcoming National Party split grew stronger today with the rescheduling for tonight of a meeting between Roelf Meyer and the Gauteng NP executive. The meeting was originally planned for Friday, one day before a crucial meeting of the province’s party caucus.
Meyer is expected to resign from the party at the weekend but has said he would consult the Gauteng party leaders before making a decision. His resignation would pave the way for the establishment of a new political party, or a non-party movement – both possibilities mooted after NP leader FW de Klerk disbanded Meyer’s task team which had been tasked with repositioning the NP.
