MONDAY, 9.00AM:
Moroka Swallows thumped Michau Warriors 2-0 at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday, giving them a three point boost in the league log. The first goal came just before half-time, when Joseph Rapelago passed the ball to defender Mark Byrne, who promptly netted it. The next goal came after much tense playing in the 88th minute. Warriors now have to worry seriously about their spot on the relegation line.
In the big game of the weekend, Orlando Pirates held their own against Kaizer Chiefs in a scrappy game at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, after a last minute goal levelled the score to a 1-1 draw. Chiefs opened the score early with a very energetic attack in the first few minutes. Some nifty playing by captain Neil Tovey and Shakes Kungoane allowed Thabo Mooki a clear pass to Williams to score. Chiefs defended their score until the last minute, when Jerry Sikhosana saved the day for Pirates with the equalizer. Referee Raymond Rogers handed out five yellow cards during the game, for dissent and foul play.
In Cape Town, home team Spurs drew 3-3 with Bush Bucks at the Athlone Stadium, thanks to an own goal by Spurs’ David Kannemeyer. The two sides were neck-and-neck all the way, with a 1-1 draw at half-time. The first goal came in the 27th minute by Bucks’ Shaun Donnelly, but Spurs soon surpassed that with two goals; one from Epangala Lokose and another from Elton Meiring in the 61st minute.
A mix-up then resulted in a goal for Bucks, when David Kannemeyer kicked in a goal past his own goalkeeper, and Bucks’ Thabo Mngomeni pressed the advantage and scored the third goal in the 81st minute. Meiring didn’t let them get away with it though, and headed in a pass from Kannemeyer in the last few minutes, to leave the score level.
Amazulu trampled on Witbank Aces’ hopes of staying in the top division with a resounding 3-1 win over the hapless Aces on their home turf. The goals came from Edries Burton in the 12th minute, Simon Magagula in the 16th minute and Jabulani Ndwandwe in the 27th minute. Aces tried hard in the second half, with a goal in the 55th minute from Adam Mabena, but it was too little too late.
