Coetzer through to Paris third round

AMANDA COETZER did it again, beating Amy Frazier (USA) 7-6, 6-4 in the second round of the French Open in Paris on Wednesday. The only other South African to score a victory on Wednesday was men’s doubles player Piet Norval.

Norval partnered British Neil Broad to win 6-3,6-2 over Byron Black of Zimbabwe and Justin Gimelstop, from the USA in their first-round match. Other South African men’s doubles players, Byron Talbot, Wayne Ferreira, David Adams, Marius Barnard and John-Laffnie de Jager, lost their matches.

Talbot, paired with Libor Pimek (Belgium), lost 5-7, 0-6 to Petr Korda (Czech Republic) and Jeff Salzenstein (USA). Ferreira and Adams lost to Dutch duo Jaco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Barnard and De Jager bowed out to Mark Knowls (Bahamas) and Daniel Nestor (Canada), 6-3, 7-6.
