THURSDAY, 10.00AM:
HOLLAND trounced a young and fresh-faced South African side 2-1 in the Nelson Mandela Inauguration Cup match at FNB Stadium near Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
Bafana Bafana trotted out several new recruits to the national side, including goalkeeper Brian Baloyi, and the team played defensively, but former European champions Holland were too skillful for them
The first goal came early on, when Dutch captain Aaron Winter passed to Giovanni van Bronkhorst, who kicked it home from 30 metres out, past the unsuspecting Baloyi.
Though Bafana rallied well, they missed all their opportunities to equalise the score.
Thomas Madigage made a brave effort to equalise in the 53rd minute, shaving the ball past the posts, but Jean-Paul van Gastel made Holland’s win more conclusive with his goal in the 58th minute.
New players on the South African side were Baloyi, Andrew Rabutla, Clinton Larsen, Brendan Silent, Benedict McCarthy, Lawrence Mooki and Bradley Carnell. Coach Clive Barker said the team to face Zambia will be more experienced.
