Britain backs Nigeria ban

GAUTENG HOSPITALS TO CLOSE THREE Gauteng hospitals are to close soon — Andrew McColm, Westfort and Khayalami Hospitals have stopped admitting new patients and will close sometime in early August. The Hillbrow Hospital is to be downgraded to a community clinic by December.

PW’S TESTIMONY FORMER president PW Botha is to launch his biography “Stem uit die Wilderness” (Voice from the Wilderness), on Friday evening in George, in the Western Cape. The 460-page book is written by a former aide, Dr Daan Prinsloo, and is published by Vaandel Uitgewers. Botha said he considers the book his testimony to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and “has nothing more to say than is contained in it”.

LETSIE TO BE CROWNED KING Letsie III of Lesotho is to be officially crowned on October 31 in a ceremony at Maseru. Prince Charles of England will be among the dignitaries and heads of state attending the ceremony.

CHOLERA OUTBREAK OVER a hundred people died of cholera in various parts of Cameroon recently. The far northern regions of the country have been worst affected with almost 70 casualties so far.

MS MAJOR-GENERAL BRIGADIER Joan C van der Poel was promoted to the rank of major-general in the South African National Defence Force on Thursday. She is the second South African woman with that rank — the other is Major General Jackie Sedibe.
