THURSDAY, 1.00PM:
MOROKA SWALLOWS on Thursday announced their three sponsors for the season — Nike, Elephant Beer and Independent Newspapers. Swallows have signed a three-year contract with Nike as their technical sponsor and have renewed their contract with Elephant Beer.
The sponsorship means that Swallows will have constant contact with other Nike-sponsored clubs — Brazil’s national team, Borussia Dortmund in Germany, PSV Eidenhoven in Holland and Arsenal in England. Swallows will send players from time to time to these clubs for trials .
Swallows defender and former South African under-23 captain Percy Molotsane is the first player to benefit from the project. He leaves on Thursday for Holland to join PSV Eidenhoven for trials.
Elephant Beer managing director Ron Schreuder said Swallows will earn R2-million from the deal: “This is the biggest sponsorship the club has ever had, but it will be on a basis of the more they win the more they earn.”
Independent Newspapers also launched Swallows’ supporters magazine which will only cater for the “Birds” supporters.
Swallows managing director Chicco Twala said the sponsorship will help to ensure that the club regains its status as one of the biggest teams in the country.
