SA nets half a dozen medals in Sicily

SOUTH AFRICA took home half-a-dozen medals from the World Student Games in Sicily — they won two more bronze medals at the swimming events in Messina this weekend.

Brendon Dedekind came third in the men’s 50m freestyle, with a time of 23,07secs. The women’s 4x100m medley team finished in 4min 15,54secs. The team was made up of Ingrid Theunissen, Kirsten van Heerden, Kim van Selm and double Olympic medallist Penny Heyns.

South Africa came 16th overall, thanks to the two gold medals and two silver medals won earlier in the Games.

DONALD SHINES SOUTH AFRICAN fast-bowler Allan Donald has been performing miracles for his English county team Warwickshire this season — Donald took five wickets for 10 runs in a league game against Essex on Sunday, helping Warwickshire win by 147 runs.

SPRINT FESTIVAL NAMIBIAN Frankie Fredericks won both the men’s 100m dash and the 200m dash at the “Sprint Festival” in Catania this weekend. The Festival was held in conjunction with the 19th World Student Games.

RUSSIANS BEAT SA SOUTH AFRICAN hockey took another knock on Sunday, when a Russian selection team beat the SA men’s squad 2-1 at the opening match of their tour of Moscow.

ZAMBIA WIN COSAFA CUP ZAMBIA drew 1-1 with Namibia before a capacity crowd at the Windhoek Independence Stadium on Sunday, to take the inaugural Cosafa Castle Cup title.

KIWIS BEAT ACADEMY THE SA Plascon Academy cricket team lost their four-day match by six wickets to a touring New Zealand team in Krugersdorp on Sunday. The visitors had to chase 258, and managed to meet the score in just 69 overs.

SHOWJUMPING LEAGUE BARRY TAYLOR won the fourth leg of the Volvo World Cup SA showjumping league with a clear round at the Pretoria Show on Sunday.

ALLEM LEADS SA-born Fulton Allem took the lead in the Greater Milwaukee Open at Brown Deer on Saturday, with a seven-under-par 64 in the third round.

BAIOCCHI ON FORM SOUTH AFRICAN Hugh Baiocchi had a second-round score of 70 at the Pittsburgh Senior Classic in Midway on Sunday to stand at 140 — four strokes behind the leader, Bob Duval. Fellow South African John Bland is one stroke behind Baiocchi.

KALLIS TAKES CHARGE SOUTH AFRICAN cricketer Jacques Kallis took 3/39 and made 172 runs (not out) for his English county team Middlesex in the a match against Worcestershire at Kidderminster in London on Saturday.

STARS’ APPEARANCE CONFIRMED INTERNATIONAL tennis stars Andre Agassi, Boris Becker and Goran Ivanisevic are to appear at an eight-man charity tournament at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town in December, to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

DUATHLON WINNERS WARREN Hinchcliffe and Fiddy Gey van Pittius won the SA ultra duathlon championships in Durban on Sunday. Hinchcliffe finished the 10km run and 60km cycle in 2:37:12 and Van Pittius finished in 2:57:58.
