KENYA’S President Daniel Arap Moi has renewed his attacks on foreigners and refugees, calling on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to move out all Somali refugees in Kenya.
“We are being treated like fools by being so generous in every thing”, the president told a fund raising meeting in aid of Kenyan women at the weekend.
Moi said the government was not being allowed to inspect the refugee camps, where the refugees were believed to have arms caches. He also accused the refugees of engaging in “acts of lawlessness”.
Moi said he hard ordered that various camps in northern Kenya be relocated to Somalia or Sudan, unless his security forces were able to inspect the camps and seize arms.
KENYAN police fired teargas to break up a pro-democracy rally in the opposition stronghold of Kisumu, 300km north-west of Nairobi. They also arrested a pro-democracy leader as he landed at the local airport, and broke up an open-air market close to where the rally was to be held.
