WEDNESDAY, 12.30PM:
SOUTH Africa’s under 19 World Cup squad on Tuesday beat Kenya by 80 runs in a polished performance at the Soweto Oval.
South Africa scored 283/8 after being asked to bat. The mainstay of the South African innings, Jon Kent, scored an impressive 102 off 129 balls in an innings which included nine fours.
Michael Lumb and skipper Matthew Street were also in amongst the runs, both scoring 52.
Visiting skipper Thomas Odoyo took three wickets in his 10 overs, but was bludgeoned for 71 runs. After bowling well for six overs, conceding a relatively economical 24 runs, Andrew Mboya was inexplicably left out of the attack.
Once at the crease the Kenyans struggled with the pace of Victor Mpitsang, while Murray Creed also created problems for the batsmen in the first ten overs. It was only Thomas Odoyo and Edward Mboyo who gave some credibility to the Kenyan scorecard.
The South Africans all bowled tightly, with the pick of the bowlers leg-spinner Jacques Rudolph taking 3/38 in his 10 overs.
South Africa are now assured of winning their section, and have picked up a spot in the Super League. Their next game is against Scotland on Thursday.
