Da Silva wins at Wild Coast

MONDAY, 12.30PM:

ZIMBABWE-based Brazilian Adilson da Silva kept his cool to record a two-stroke victory in the R500 000 Nashua Wild Coast Sun Challenge.

Da Silva carded a superb 66 to take him to a two-shot victory over Chris Davison, Marco Gortana, Hennie Walters and American Scott Dunlap

Da Silva won with a seven-under-par 273 after teeing off five behind joint leaders Alan McLean and Clinton Whitelaw. While the players ahead of him couldn’t come to terms with the tricky conditions, he picked up five birdies to ensure his first big-money victory on tour.

Meanwhile, Gavin Levenson and American Ronnie McCann were reinstated to the Nashua Wild Coast Golf Challenge tornament after both had been disqualified on Saturday for allegedly infringing the rules during the second round.

SMALL IN PUNCH-UP SPRINGBOK winger James Small was involved in yet another punch-up at the weekend, this time with Bok teammate Toks van der Linde. According to witnesses, Small allegedly grabbed for a knife after Van der Linde hit him at a pre-season social function in Hermanus on the Cape coast. Van der Linde said that he cannot recall Small grabbing a knife, but did admit to having an altercation with him.

BOLAND BLUDGEON GAUTENG BOLAND beat Gauteng with nine wickets and a day to spare in their Supersport Series match at Paarl on Sunday. The win moves Boland to second spot on the log.

CALLAGHAN GETS BIRTHDAY TON DAVE CALLAGHAN celebrated his 32nd birthday in style by scoring his 14th career first-class century for Eastern Province against Border on the third day of their Supersport Series cricket match at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Sunday. The home side’s skipper, Kepler Wessels, also waded in with a huge 179 to give Eastern Province a first-innings lead of 294.

HAMED NO TO BUNGU SOUTH African IBF junior featherweight champion Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu’s proposed fight against British boxing sensation Prince Naseem Hamed has been put on hold. In order to break Brian Mitchell’s record of 12 successful title defences, Bungu will fight in the USA for ABC television in April.

GORE TAKES TRIATHLON NATIONAL ultra-distance and African triathlon champion Glen Gore won the Game/Voltaren/Slow Mag Central Gauteng triathlon championships in Benoni on Sunday. The winning time was 1 hour 46 minutes and 23 seconds.

HANSIE MIGHT MISS FIRST TEST SOUTH African cricket skipper Hansie Cronje might miss the first home Test against Pakistan at the Wanderers due to a knee injury. If Cronje requires surgery on the knee ,Gary Kirsten will most likely take over as skipper.
