Price leads Dimension Data Pro-Am

FRIDAY, 12.30PM:

AFTER sharing the lead with five other players on Thursday, defending champion Zimbabwean Nick Price has taken the lead in the $2-million Dimension Data Pro-Am tournament at Sun City on Friday.

Starting the second round on three under par, Price was eight under after 12 holes on the Lost City course.

Overnight co-leader, South African-born Italian Marco Gortana, is in second spot on five under after a second-round first nine of 34 on the Gary Player course.

RICHARDS HELPS SRI LANKA FORMER SA batsmen Barry Richards will help the Sri Lankan cricket team, particularly the batsmen, to get into nick for their upcoming tour to South Africa starting on March 7. The tour includes two tests and a triangular limited overs tournament with SA and Pakistan.

COETZEE IN BIG LEAGUE JEFF COETZEE has been added to SA’s Davis Cup squad to play Germany in Bremen from April 3-5. He joins skipper Danie Visser and teammates Wayne and Ellis Ferreira, Grant Stafford, Marcos Ondruska, David Adams and Wesley Whitehouse.

SA SKATER TO FINAL

ONE of two South African competitors at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Shirene Human, on Wednesday made it through to the finals of the figure skating, qualifying 23rd of the 24 skaters selected.

GREEN LIGHT FOR BELGIAN GP

THE International Automobile Federation (FIA), has given the green light to Spa-Francorchamps to stage the 1998 Belgian Formula One Grand Prix. The August 30 race had been threatened by imminent Belgian government regulations banning all tobacco advertising and sponsorships. China and South Africa were ready to fill the breah should Belgium have dropped out. The reserves are still waiting to hear weether the Portuguese Grand Prix will go ahead.

SA TO BID FOR 2006 WORLD CUP

SOUTH African Football Association CEO Danny Jordaan heads back to Burkina Faso on Friday to make the official announcement of SA’s bid to host the 2006 Soccer World Cup. The announcement has been timed to coincide with the African Cup of Nations semifinals next Tuesday. Backing the bid will be the National Olympic Committee of SA.

FERREIRA OUT

SOUTH African Wayne Ferreira was knocked out of the first round of the European Community tennis championships on Wednesday, going down 6-3 6-3 to Australian Open champ Czech Petr Korda.

AMAZULU SUSPEND COACH

Premier League outfit AmaZulu have slapped an indefinite suspension on coach Boniface Doe, saying: “He has lost control.”
