THURSDAY, 3.00PM:
GOVERNMENT research indicates that the Atomic Energy Corporation should be split into two sections, one of which should be privatised.
The Cabinet-mandated research says there is no further need for the AEC’s original nuclear research mandate, which should now be scrapped. A new public company, AEC Technology, should be established to develop and market technology and related products from the Pelindaba and Valindaba sites.
The government would have to retain responsibility for certain nuclear-fuel related responsibilities, such as radioactive waste management.
