Griquas tame Lions

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Sunday 11.30pm.

GRIQUALAND West chalked up an impressive 36-16 win over the Golden Lions at Absa Park in Kimberley on Sunday, in a match that was marred by much directionless kicking in the first half.

Griquas led 15-3 at half-time.

Both teams defended superbly in the very physical encounter, but Griquas succeeded in scoring a goal and a try before half time.

The Lions came out roaring after the break, but could not force any points onto the board. Converted tries for Griquas in the 13th and 19th minutes saw the home team put on a good lead, even though wily flyhalf Boeta Wessels was replaced by Robert Markram.

Springbok and Golden Lions right wing James Small did not have many attacking options, but played well in defence.

Defending Currie Cup champions Western Province were stunned on Saturday when they went down 25-39 to a courageous and spirited Boland Cavaliers side at Newlands in Cape Town.

Boland took the game to a Western Province side that seemed confused and unsure of themselves, the backs in particular did not play even close to their usual standards.

THE Natal Sharks destroyed Northern Free State 57-3 in a Currie Cup match played at King’s Park on Saturday. In a rare occurence, the entire front row scored tries, with Ollie le Roux getting two.

SOUTH Western Districts and the Gauteng Falcons drew 21-21 in an untidy match played at Outeniqua Stadium in George on Saturday.

THE Blue Bulls beat Border 59-21 in their Currie Cup match played at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. The Bulls were leading 28-0 at half-time.

EASTERN Province continued their good run of form, beating the Mpumalanga Pumas 20-18 in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
