Cosmos deadlock with Birds

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Thursday 1.30pm.

JOMO Cosmos and Moroka Swallows deadlocked to a 2-2 draw in their Castle Premier League match at the George Goch Stadium on Wednesday.

The match was replayed on Wednesday after Swallows players were struck by lightning during the first clash between the the sides a fortnight ago and the match had to be abandoned with Cosmos leading 2-0.

Cosmos drew first blood when former Bafana Bafana defender Andrew Rabutla nodded home off a free-kick by Brian Sebapola in the 36th minute.

After half-time, the Birds levelled through midfielder Maybin Thama from a corner-kick taken by Mahlomolo Ntshabeleng in the 50th minute.

Mozambican international striker Manuel “Tico-Tico” Bucuane put Cosmos back in the lead in the 58th minute, but seven minutes later Swallows defender Debo Kitenge made it 2-2 with a tap-in after a mix-up between Rabutla and Cosmos goalkeeper Silver Tshabalala.

THEY SAID IT

“There is shock and surprise and gloom and worry. We have never had such a crisis before.

The public will always back the players. You are talking about two darlings of the West Indies. The backing for Brian Lara and Carl Hooper is immense.

I would say 80 per cent of the people are on the players’ side.” — West Indies Cricket Commentator Reds Perreira on the sacking of West Indies skipper and vice-skipper, Brian Lara and Carl Hooper. Lara and Hooper withdrew from the West Indies side to tour South Africa after a pay dispute, and consequently have been backed by more than half the touring players, leading to the possibility of the five-Test series being called off.
