President Nelson Mandela will unveil a memorial to Mozambican President Samora Machel on January 19. Mozambican President Joachim Chissano will also attend the ceremony at Mbuzini in Mpumalanga, near the site where Machel was killed in an air crash in 1986. Machel and 34 others died on October 9 1986, when their aircraft crashed in mountainous terrain near Mbuzini. The memorial was designed by Mozambican architect Jose Forjaz.
