NEW LAND FOR DUKUDUKU SQUATTERS

THE 944 families illegally living in the Dukuduku State Forest near the protected St Lucia estuary in northern KwaZulu-Natal have agreed to resettle on alternative land provided by the government. Water Affairs and Forestry Minister Kader Asmal said on Tuesday that the police and the army have been requested to assist with resettling the community. Registration of those living in the forest will start on Tuesday afternoon and only those who register will be allowed to resettle on the land provided, Asmal said. It is hoped this will bring to an end a hard-fought battle between the Department of Forestry and the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Service, on one hand, and, on the other hand, squatters who have methodically cleared and burnt the forest since they started arriving in the area in the 1980s.
