NAMIBIA is in the throes of global warming and is already experiencing the impact of climate change according to the latest Climate Change Report for Namibia. Jackie Tarr of the country’s environmental affairs department said last week that since 1970 there has been a noticeable decline in rainfall in Namibia coupled with the hottest temperatures being recorded in the SADC region since 1980. It cannot be proved this is due to global warming, but the changes require long-term planning by government, she said. The Namibian government ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1995, undertaking to submit a report to the United Nations within three years, and will do so at the end of March.
