THE Carter Center and the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs has approved the outcome of Sunday’s presidential vote in Nigeria, but also urged that all “credible and documented” allegations of electoral violations be investigated. The two organizations sent a 66-member delegation headed by former United States president Jimmy Carter to Nigeria to monitor the poll. On Monday, Carter refrained from approving Obasanjo’s victory, noting widespread fraud in the electoral process in a letter to Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission. But on Tuesday the observer mission has noted “many positive elements of the election process, including the peaceful conduct of the balloting… the general lack of intimidation of voters, and the thorough and fair coverage by the Nigerian Media.”
