NATIONAL Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka announced on Tuesday that his office will appeal against the suspended sentence handed down last week to convicted baby killer Nicholas Steyn. Steyn was sentenced to five years’ jail suspended for three years after being found guilty of culpable homicide and assault for an incident in April 1998 when he fired shots at a group of children walking on his plot. He killed six-month-old Angelina Zwane and injured her 11-year-old cousin Francina Dlamini, whom he had mistaken for trespassers. In a statement on Tuesday, Ngcuka said that Pretoria Director of Public Prosecutions Dr Silas Ramaite is preparing to file an application for leave to appeal in the high court. Ngcuka added: “After studying the preliminary report of the [state] advocate in charge of the case, he [Ramaite] felt that the sentence handed to Steyn was not an adequate deterrent and did not sufficiently address the interests of society.”
