CALM returned to the capital of the Comoros islands in the Indian Ocean on Thursday after three days of violent protests, residents said. For three days, gangs of youths on the main island of Grand Comore attacked the homes and cars of residents originally from the small island of Anjouan, which declared its independence from the Comoros central government in 1997. The unrest followed a weekend agreement signed by the government of President Tadjiddine Ben Said Massonde under which the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros will be renamed the Union of Comoros Islands and each of the three islands — Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli — will have its own parliament. Anjounnais, many of whom have now fled Grand Comore, said on Thursday their treatment in the last few days will shore up support for full independence for Anjouan.
