AUSTRALIAN World Cup umpire Darrell Hair, who called Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Murlitharan for throwing four years ago, has allegedly received death threats from a Tamil group, media reports said here on Wednesday. Hair described the spinner’s action as “diabolical”, after coming in for round condemnation in Sri Lanka for calling him on throwing seven times in 1995. Due to the dispute over Muralitharan’s action, World Cup officials have kept a discreet distance between Hair and any of Sri Lanka’s matches in the upcoming tournament. Hair has been reprimande by the International Cricket Council, which has cleared the bowler of any diabolical throwing.
