ASEC ADVANCE, DESPITE LOSS

ONE West African giant advanced and another fell by the wayside in African club championship second-round, second-leg matches this weekend. Champions League holders Asec lost 2-1 in Algeria to Al-Harrach, but were comfortable winners on aggregate having triumphed 4-0 in Cote d’Ivoire two weeks ago. The Asec bank balance swelled by $150000 for reaching the round- robin phase of the competition where eight clubs are divided into two group with the winners contesting the final. Former African champions Asante Kotoko of Ghana bowed out of the Cup Winners Cup after losing 4-2 on penalties to debutants Al-Masry in the Mediterranean town of Port Said. The Egyptians wiped out a 1-0 first-leg deficit through a 58th-minute goal from Seif Daoud before winning their second successive tie through spot-kick accuracy.
