IEC SCRAPS 428 CANDIDATES

THE Independent Electoral Commission announced on Tuesday that it has scrapped a total of 428 candidates from its final list for the elections. Deputy chief electoral officer Norman du Plessis said that some candidates lost their place on the lists because they failed to sign the relevant documents accepting their nomination, while on other applications the identity numbers of candidates were not provided. Du Plessis said chief electoral officer Mandla Mchunu had objected to 746 candidates, including 90 who were not on the voters’ roll. The IEC upheld 428 of Mchunu’s complaints bringing down to 7136 the total number of candidacies on the final lists. A total of 4964 individuals are standing for election on June 2.
